San Angelo ISD Invites Community to Celebrate Reading on 2nd Annual San Angelo READS! Day December 9th

San Angelo ISD is excited to host the second annual San Angelo READS! Day next Thursday, December 9th to inspire a love of reading in support of our community-wide literacy initiative San Angelo READS! 

SAISD invites the Concho Valley community to join our students, staff and generous community partners like Whataburger, Tom Green County Library, HEB, Angelo State University, Howard College, Scholastic Education, Shannon Medical Center, the United Way of the Concho Valley, Adult Literacy Council and more, in celebrating this special day and literacy all year long. Community members can take part in this day in big ways, or as simple as reading with a family member, donating a book to someone in need or supporting a literacy program in our community. 

We invite our community to follow our website, Facebook and Twitter accounts to see some ways you can join in the fun, starting next Monday, December 6, 2021 as we gear up for the big day with extra excitement all day long on San Angelo READS! Day on December 9th. Some of the fun our schools and community can look forward to includes:

• a City Council Proclamation formally announcing December 9th as San Angelo READS! Day in partnership with the City of San Angelo, Mayor Gunter, community leaders on December 7th, 
• a District-wide book giveaway to all SAISD 3rd graders compliments Whataburger with a Facebook live read aloud of the book at 2pm on December 9th, 
• Special read alouds by community leaders and partners throughout the day on December 9th,
• Special surprise visits to some campuses by the likes of Clifford the Big Red Dog and HEBuddy,
• a fun, promotional giveaway of reading goodies via Facebook, and
• Radio remotes on December 9th in partnership with KIXY 94.7 fm with some giveaways.

San Angelo ISD is proud to continue the community-wide literacy initiative, San Angelo READS!, in partnership with our community. We created San Angelo READS! to promote and encourage reading and the future-ready learner profile attributes among our students and greater community. The goal of San Angelo READS! is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy, and to inspire a love for reading. This exciting initiative is driven by statistics that show how vitally important literacy and modeling reading is to providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age. Statistics like: Children who do not read on grade level by the end of the 3rd grade only have a 1 in 8 chance of catching up to other students who are reading within their grade level and are 4 times more likely to drop out of school, and children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers.

During our first annual San Angelo READS! Day on December 9, 2020, SAISD elementary campuses celebrated with special activities for our students, including fun read alouds, dressing up as their favorite literary characters, unveiling a book vending machine, and more. Also, each 3rd grade student received a copy of “San Angelo A to Z” by Linda Thorsen Bond compliments of the San Angelo Area Foundation, and the District shared a celebratory read aloud video of the book showcasing community members, SAISD students and staff.

The San Angelo Reads! community-wide literacy initiative was founded by the District in 2020 to promote and encourage reading and the SAISD future-ready learner profile attributes among SAISD students and the greater San Angelo community. The goal of the literacy initiative is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy and to inspire a love for reading. This exciting initiative is driven by statistics which show how vitally important literacy is to providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age. Children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers. SAISD is focused on building literacy skills that create students who are prepared for future successes, inside and outside the classroom and beyond their time in our hallways.
